In this luxury tour, learn about God Amun-Ra, the first and main god in ancient Egypt. The Pyramids builders who lived during the Old Kingdom believed in the God Amu Ra. God Amun is described in the Pyramid texts as the primeval creator and symbol of creative force. The worship of God Amun Ra rose in ancient Egypt when the Theban Pharaoh Ahmose I successfully expelled the Hyksos from Egypt, and then he started to show his gratitude to God Amun Ra.

During the Middle Kingdom, the royal family established temples to God Amun Ra. God Amun Ra was depicted in ancient Egyptian temples and tombs as a ram, which by the Great Pyramids was a symbol of fertility in ancient Egypt. During the New Kingdom, ancient Egyptian artists used to show him as a pharaoh wearing his double crown to refer to his control over Upper and Lower Egypt. Sometimes they showed him sitting on his throne with his wife, Goddess Mut, and their son, God Khunsu.

Day 4: Nile

Start your private custom tour with a visit to the Aswan High Dam and learn about its challenging history. Enjoy watching the friendship symbol, which explains the history and building process of the high dam in detail. Travel next to the Temple of Philae. Learn about God Osiris during your customized tour of the Philae temple. God Osiris is the god of the afterlife in the ancient Egyptian civilization and the court’s chief. He was one of the most important gods of ancient Egypt.

God Osiris had a long war and struggle story with god Seth, known as the bad god. God Seth drowned Osiris during one of their battles, tore Osiris’s body into 14 pieces, and scattered them all over Egypt. His wife, the Goddess of magic, looked for his body and brought him back to life. They remarried and gave birth to Hours, the falcon-headed god. The son of God Osiris, God Horus fought against Seth and won after a long war.

Philae temple is a hidden gem in Upper Egypt; the temple’s history goes back to the 7th century BC. In 1971, The United Nations with UNESCO helped Egypt save the temple after the Egyptians built the High Dam. The high water level was a real threat to the temple, and they had to cut the temple into pieces and move it to a higher island, Egilika Island.

In the afternoon, enjoy a private guided tour to Kom Ombo temple, where you can learn about God Sobek. Sobek is depicted with a human body and a crocodile face.

Ancient Egyptians who traveled and worked by the River Nile were very afraid of crocodiles. They hoped if they prayed to Sobek, he would protect them from the crocodiles. All the temples built for God Sobek were in areas where crocodiles were common.

After visiting the Kom Ombo temple, enjoy visiting the crocodile museum to see tens of mummified crocodiles as ancient Egyptians used to mummify them and put if in coffins inside the temple to protect them.

Day 5: Nile

Today, visit Edfu temple on a private guided tour to learn about God Horus, the falcon-headed god. While in Edfu, the story of Horus and his bad uncle, God Seth, is not to be missed. Horus is one of the few gods that appeared as a local god in many places and under different names.

Horus was the son of Osiris, the god of the afterlife. Horus had a long war with Seth, who was a symbol of evil. Finally, Horus defeated Seth but, unfortunately, lost his left eye in one of the battles. Hathor was the wife of God Horus, the falcon-headed god. She used to be depicted in different images, including a cow, a woman with cow ears, or a pair of elegant horns.

She was always depicted in red, which used to refer to the color of passion. During the time of Alexander the Great and his followers, the Ptolemaic, Horus was identified with Apollo, and his town of Edfu was called Apollionoplis.

In the afternoon, the Nile cruise will arrive in Luxor. In a custom private tour, learn about Goddess Mut, who used to be depicted as a woman, sometimes with wings, or as a vulture wearing royalty crowns. The worship of goddess Mut rose during the New Kingdom during her husband’s golden era, God Amun Ra.

Ancient Egyptians used to celebrate the Opet Festival, one of the most famous festivals in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians used to carry a small boat with the golden statue of Mut and sail down the Nile between Karnak and Luxor temples. This festival was known as the honeymoon for God Amun Ra and his wife, Goddess Mut.

Day 6: Luxor

In a luxury tour with your private Egyptologist guide, visit the west bank of Luxor. Here, you will learn about God Anubis, the god of mummification, and the necropolis guard. God Anubis is depicted as a man with the head of a jackal holding a divine scepter carried by kings and gods.

In Ancient Egypt, God Anubis was known as the god of the dead. Later, his role was usurped by God Osiris as he became much more popular than Anubis, specifically during the Greco-Roman period.

The ancient Egyptians choose the jackal to be their god of mummification because they hoped to invoke him to protect their deceased from jackals and other desert animals.

Learn about Goddess Hathor during your visit to Queen Hatshepsut temple. Goddess Hathor was the goddess of motherhood and love. Visit her chapel in a private guided tour and learn about the different figures of Hatshepsut, such as women with cow ears, cow, or human face with two horns.

Day 7: Luxor – Cairo

Transfer in a private vehicle between your hotel and the airport is provided.

Flight from Luxor to Cairo is provided.

An airport transfer with a private vehicle in Cairo is provided.

Wander around the Egyptian Museum with your private guide and explore the history of God Aton. Aton was depicted as the sun disk with rays reaching the earth. The sun rays ended as human hands and often extended the ankh to the pharaoh.

The biggest promoter of God Aton’s religion was King Amenhotep IV or king Akhenaten. When king Akhenaten started worshipping God Aton, he had a big struggle with the priest of God Amun. The priests of God Amun found that they may lose their prestige if people started following the new religion of God Aton.

When the relationship between Akhenaton and priests of God Amun started getting strained, King Akhenaten held a religious revolution. He invited the people of Luxor (Thebes) to follow his new God, Aton. He was forced to leave Thebes (Luxor) because it was the God Amun-Ra religion center. Nefertiti, his wife, left with him. They left for the new capital, Tell al Amarna, which later became the God Aton center. Nefertiti was not just a wife for Akhenaton, but she was his life partner and his only supporter when everyone was against him for changing the main religion of the Thebes.

After the death of Akhenaten, Nefertiti supported King Tut to take over the control of the country. She was more experienced than King Tut’s mother due to her long time in rule with Akhenaten and the royal family. The religion of God Aton almost stopped after the death of pharaoh Akhenaten.

Things you should know before you visit Egypt

Documents

If you are an American, you will need a valid passport for at least 6 months after the day you plan to return from Egypt. You must also provide proof that you intend to return or continue your travels elsewhere. You are responsible for ensuring your passport is current and that your name on your passport matches all other travel documents we will issue. If you find that your name differs between any documents, please let us know right away.

Visas

You will need a visa to travel to and inside Egypt. You can get one when you arrive at Cairo airport. We can include visa fees and proceeds in your itinerary upon request. When you leave Egypt, you must show proof of entry via a stamp on your valid passport. If you don’t provide this stamp, officials may prevent you from leaving Egypt.

Insurance

It is a good idea to have insurance if you need to cancel your trip or any medical need while abroad. Most insurance policies also cover baggage loss/damage or problems completing the trip due to circumstances beyond your control. Get a policy that provides medical coverage to avoid large health care expenses in an emergency. We can help you find the right insurance policy for your trip with us.

Clothing for women

In general, for women traveling to Egypt, anything that is below the knee should be fine. Short sleeves should be fine as well, but nothing too short or too tiny. You do not need to cover your head in Egypt but do dress modestly. Wear pants or long skirts. It is hot in the summertime so that loose-fitting pants will be more comfortable than a pair of skinny jeans. It is also dusty and dirty, so that white clothing will appear soiled far more quickly than other colors’ clothing.

Electricity, Internet and Phone

Egypt’s power grid is set up for 220V AC. Some rural areas only have 110V AC. Sockets are either the “Type C” Europlug or the “Type E” and “Type F” Schuko plug. You’ll need to purchase an adapter for devices from North America. Outlets marked as 110V or “For Shavers Only” won’t work for devices not rated for 110V and may even damage them.
Mobile phone roaming charges are different between carriers, so be sure to check on costs with your phone provider in each area you’ll travel to.
The large cities such as Dahab, Luxor, Cairo, and Alexandria have many Internet cafes where you can pay to use the WiFi or wired network ports. Some small towns like Siwa have at least one Internet cafe. Hotel in-room or lobby WiFi can be expensive, so check the rates before connecting to their services. Osiris Tours will not have control over which hotels have Internet access, but we do have information on which establishments are likely to provide it. We can help you find contact information to get in touch with the properties directly and ask what they make available.
– Time Zone: UTC+2
– Electricity: 220V AC + 110V in certain rural areas
– Telephone: Country code for calling you from outside Egypt is 20
– Calling North America: Dial 00 + 1 and your 10 digit number
– Emergency numbers in Egypt: Police: 122; Tourist Police: 126; Ambulance: 123; Fire: 125

Weather

Egypt is very dry in some places and very wet in others. Be prepared for a hot and dry climate. It can get cold in the northern regions if you happen to visit in the Winter. Most tourists visit during the cooler months from December to February.
February to April and October to November is the best time of the year climate-wise to see the pyramids and Valley of the Kings. It can be very hot and dusty in April because of winds blowing in from the Sahara, so visiting sites can be a bit of a problem during that month.
Updated weather forecasts can be obtained from Weather.com.

Money

We recommend that you bring about $100 US per person for each day’s expenses. Small bills are best to tip waiters, porters, and housekeeping. Tipping is at your discretion based on your satisfaction with the service you receive.
The Egyptian currency is called the “Egyptian Pound” (guinay in Arabic). Notes come in denominations of 5pt, 10pt, 25pt, 50pt, E£1, E£5, E£10, E£20, E£50 and E£100. Coins come in denominations of 10pt, 20pt, 25pt, 50pt, and E£1. Some tour operators and hotels only accept US dollars or Euros.
Get your Egyptian Pound currency from your own bank before leaving or from an Egyptian bank machine. Those methods are cheaper than in the airport currency exchange or in tourist areas. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but your bank card may or may not be valid in-country.

Vaccinations

There are currently no vaccinations required to travel to Egypt.
There have been some occurrences of “Bird Flu” (avian influenza) in Egypt. We recommend that you:
– Avoid going to live animal farms or poultry markets.
– Avoid eating eggs or poultry that have not been fully cooked.
– Wash your hands regularly.
– See a doctor if you feel any flu symptoms coming on while traveling or after you return home.

Medicines

Make a list of all the medicines and medical items you need to bring with you on your trip, plus dosages of prescription drugs, details of prescription glasses and contacts, and any other medical necessities. Put spare eyewear and medications in checked and carry-on bags in case some of your luggage gets lost in transit.
There are non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines available in Egypt, but it is often difficult to get prescription medication or eyewear. Bring water purification devices or iodine tablets in case bottled water is not available. We can advise which locations will have potable vs. non-potable water. We strongly recommend bringing some type of over-the-counter diarrhea medication.
Medical Needs Checklist
– Basic first aid and medicine kit (band-aids, antiseptics, pain meds).
– Pepto-Bismol, Imodium, electrolyte powders for adding to drinking water to solve dehydration problems, and anti-diarrheal medications.
– Anti-itch cream for insect bites and allergies.
– Tablets for motion sickness.
– SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, aloe-vera lotion for sunburn treatment, large-brim hat, lip balm, insect repellent, and sunglasses.
– Hand sanitizer and baby wipes.
